Amazing Woman, Amazing Messages
In the past few months, I've been able to work with and be exposed to some amazing women. As part of my leadership class, I had the opportunity to interview the head of a local independent school. She was the first woman leader at the school! She also played collegiate level volleyball and is now a coach. I wanted to get her take on all things: from her story, to leadership, to some advice for girls and women. A few quotes from our conversation that stood out to me were: 1. "Face the beast. And then conquer it. I would like to see more girls do that. These days, find whatever that subject is that's hard, don't run from it, face it and conquer it. You're more equipped than you think you are." My interviewee was talking specifically about how she almost failed her college Spanish class, but, this lesson is applicable to everybody. Whether it's a teacher, a school subject, a coach, a tough sports play, a boss, anything; rise up and fight through it. Women, and people in general, wouldn't be where they are today if they ran from their challenges. 2. "I think everyone should have a little butterflies. Butterflies are normal. And embrace the butterflies." Don't be afraid to be afraid. Harness your fear and run with it. Get excited about having butterflies, and use them to do and play your best. (You can also use Dragonwing to help you feel more confident about your sports-related butterflies!!) 3. "I shouldn't have to fight to be non-girly. I'm a girl. Get over it. I'm proud of being a girl." She said it all right here. No caption needed. Own it girls. This woman is doing amazing things and had a lot of great things to say about women. We need to keep women like her around! As this month is Breast Cancer Awareness month, women's strength is highlighted more than ever. 1 in 8 is a Statistic I Can't Live With
Every October during Breast Cancer Awareness month, memories of family and friends who've fought the disease flood my mind. Like most people, I've donated money for research, dropped off food for family dinners, and sent cards and emails of encouragement and, sometimes, sympathy. Something clicked this year. I can't just make dinner or send cards when statistics show that 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. This year, I am determined to do much, much more. To use the power of this business and the amazing Dragonwing community to make a real difference in medical advances -- not just for my friends or family but for women everywhere -- and for our daughters, nieces, granddaughters, so that they may have a better, healthier future. Almost 25 years ago, my beloved Auntie Vita died of breast cancer at age 51. Back then, treatment wasn't really targeted, and the doctors tried everything to cure her. It was a huge loss. Since then, scientists have made tremendous advances in breast cancer treatment. My friend for 30+ years, Lisa Carey, is medical director of UNC's Breast Cancer Center, where they are have made great strides in targeting treatment and patient care. $25,000 can make a significant difference for a cancer research project. That's why we've set a goal of raising $25,000 through the sale of a limited edition Racer Sports Bra, our best-selling item. We'll donate $10 from the sale of each special white and pink Racer to UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. It's a crazy, ambitious goal, but I believe we will do it. In response to our campaign to raise $25,000 for breast cancer research, members of the Dragonwing community asked if they could donate one of our Limited Edition pink/white Racer Sports Bras to a girl in need.
We're delighted to announce that we've partnered with U.S. soccer great Cindy Parlow Cone and her nonprofit, Goals for Girls, an international initiative of girls helping girls through soccer, to fulfill this vital need. Sports bras are the most-requested item by the girls she works with worldwide. Cindy is planning a trip to India soon, and thanks to the generosity of the Dragonwing family, she'll be taking Racer Seamless Sports Bras to girls there.
